Chasing an Iron Horse Or A Boy Adventures in the Civil War eBook Edward Robins

Book Review: Chasing an Iron Horse, or a Boy's Adventures in the Civil War (Classic Reprint), by Edward Robins, published in 1902, based on a true story.
Date of review: September 24, 2012

At a time when our nation is so divided I came across a FREE book on Kindle about an adolescent drummer boy named George Knight, accompanied by his dog Waggie. Together this pair joins a group of Union soldiers who make their way deep into southern territory, as spies, to overtake and steal a train. Their intent is to drive the train north, burning railroad bridges on their way back to their own lines. Not only is this book over 110 years old, it is based on a true story, that journalizes the penetration, techniques of survival, attack, escape and evasion, and the complete details of the raid. Written in a vocabulary much different than today's scribbling, this story addresses courage, honor, dignity between combatants, and ends with a nation re-united. One thing I learned about that period of time is the use of hand carried batteries, for electrical backup was available during the Civil War. The sad reality of this story is that even when our nation was in mortal combat between states there was a greater civility among enemies than we currently witness between politicians, conservatives, and liberals.

Chasing an Iron Horse Or A Boy Adventures in the Civil War eBook Edward Robins Reviews

This civil war story puts you in the shoes of an adventuresome lad as he and his dog as well as few others, sneak into the South to steal a supply train. Written around 1900, this book is entertaining trip back in time.
It was not my kind of book. I downloaded it but then couldn't read it as I was not interested.
ok
Very detail driven, truth based, and dense, I am so used to fluffy stories that this took me a little longer to read, but if you enjoy fiction about the era, it is an excellent read.
The story makes for some very interesting reading, although the story line gets a little predictable at times. It does give a good picture of the time frame around the Civil War and is well worth reading.
